VAASA'S FIRE ALLEYS - HISTORY, ARCHITECTURE AND EVERYDAY LIFE
Dates and times 2025: Wed 18.6. |Wed 16.7. | Wed 6.8. | at 5-6.30 pm
In the center of Vaasa and the Vöyrinkaupunki district, there are a total of 41 firebreak alleys that cut through city blocks, forming a culturally and historically valuable entity. These fire alleys, originate from the city plan of the new Vaasa, designed by provincial architect C.A. Setterberg in 1855. The old town of Vaasa had been destroyed by a fire in 1852, and in rebuilding the city, special attention was given to fire prevention. Trees were planted along the fire alleys, which, together with parks and green corridors, were intended to prevent the spread of potential fires within the city.
The names of the fire alleys reflect the history of the area and its buildings, as well as the professions and activities of those who lived along them. On this tour, we'll take a slightly unusual route through the city center and get to know the quirky charm of Vaasa's downtown.
